About Geometry Worksheet Assignment 10.4:

Assignment 10.4 is an introduction to tangents and secants.

Prerequisite Skills:  Name points and lines (Assignment 1.1).   Calculate angle measures in pairs of adjacent angles (Assignment 2.9).  Calculate measures of angles in triangles (Assignment 4.8).  Calculate measures of angles in quadrilaterals (Assignment 4.14).

Definition:  A line that intersects a circle at exactly one point is a tangent.  A line that intersects a circle in two points is a secant.

Theorem:  A line is tangent to a circle if and only if it is perpendicular to a radius of the circle at its point of tangency.
