Construction: Line Segments

About Geometry Worksheet Activity 1B:  

 

Activity 1B is practice for construction of congruent line segments and construction of line segments with lengths that are a sum, difference, or multiple of lengths of given line segments.

 

Prerequisite Skill: none 

 

How to construct congruent line segments with a compass and straightedge:

 

(Do problem 1 by following the steps below)

 

1.  Place the compass point at an endpoint (A) of the given line segment.

 

2.  Open the compass so the pencil is at the other endpoint (B).  Draw an arc intersecting that endpoint..

 

3.  Place a point (C) on the construction line.

 

4.  With the same compass opening, place the compass point on that point (C).  Draw an arc through the point (C).

 

5.  Place a point (D) at the intersection of the arc and the line.  

 

6.  Line segment (CD) on the construction line is congruent to the given line segment (AB)..
