About Geometry Worksheet Assignment 8.17:

Assignment 8.17 is an introduction to prisms.

Prerequisite Skills:  Classify polygons (Assignment 8.3).  Name polygons (Assignment 8.1).

Definitions:  A prism is a polyhedron in which at least two faces are congruent and parallel polygons and all other faces are parallelograms.

The congruent and parallel faces of a prism are its bases.  The other faces are lateral faces.

A prism with its lateral faces rectangles is right.  A prism that is not right is oblique.

A prism in which all faces are rectangles is a rectangular solid.  A prism in which all faces are squares is a cube.

The height of a prism is the distance between its bases.
