Assignment 8.18
Surface Area of Prisms
Objective
Develop and apply a formula for finding surface area of prisms.
About Geometry Worksheet Assignment 8.18:
Assignment 8.18 is an introduction to surface area of prisms.
Prerequisite Skills: Identify faces of prisms (Assignment 8.17). Find areas of rectangles and squares (Assignment 8.3). Find areas of triangles (Assignment 8.6). Find areas of regular polygons (Assignment 8.9).
Definition: A cube is a prism in which all faces are squares. A rectangular solid is a prism in which all faces are rectangles.

Theorems: The formula for the surface area of a cube is: S = 6e (S is Surface Area; e is the length of an edge of the cube)
The formula for the surface area of a rectangular solid is: S = 2 lw + 2 lh + 2 wh (S is Surface Area; l, w, and h are the length, width, height)
A formula for the surface area of a right prism is: S = 2B + pH (S is Surface Area; B and p are area and perimeter of a base; H is height)
