Calculate heights and slant heights of pyramids using the Pythagorean Theorem.
About Geometry Worksheet Assignment 8.19:
Assignment 8.19 is an introduction to pyramids.
Prerequisite Skills: Identify faces of pyramids (Assignment 8.18). Classify polygons (Assignment 3.3). Name polygons (Assignment 3.1). Use the Pythagorean Theorem to find length of sides in right triangles (Assignment 7.3).
Definitions: A pyramid is a polyhedron in which one face is any polygon (the base) and the lateral faces are triangles.
The vertex of the pyramid is the common vertex of the lateral faces.
The height of a pyramid is the length of a line segment perpendicular to the base with endpoints at the vertex of the pyramid and on its base.
A pyramid with a base that is a regular polygon and lateral faces that are congruent isosceles triangles is a regular pyramid.
The slant height of a regular pyramid is the height to the base of each isosceles triangle.
